Catholic Schools Week: Celebrating your students

Catholic Schools Week: Celebrating your students

Tuesday of Catholic Schools Week is all about the students. While teachers know school is always about the students, this is a great day let your students know how loved and appreciated they are. Here are some fun and easy ways to celebrate your students:

  1. Have a special treat or desert at lunch– Our cafeteria staff is super creative and goes over the top with items like special cupcakes and churros, but something as simple as a candy or ice cream treat for students at lunch would be a nice nod to the daily theme.
  2. Let students choose a free dress theme for the day– Popular choices at our school include sweats day, pj day, Disney day and Star Wars day. Often on this day we will have some sort of fashion show or recognize students who really embraced the theme.
  3. Have students film a video or reel about why they love your school-I think I can speak for ALMOST every middle school teacher when I say the last few years have been one class disrupting Tiktok dance trend after the next. Channel this enthusiasm and have student use their dancing skills for some fun. If your school has social media and parents approve, post the videos in the school feed!
  4. Have a no homework day– Because our school has a family bingo night on Tuesday of Catholic Schools Week every year (more on that in the family ideas), our administration has asked us to observe a night of no homework. It feels special to the students, and to be honest makes the teachers’ job easier too.
  5. Have a schoolwide game or activity– Two that have worked really well for our school are a photo scavenger hunt and a school wide kahoot. For the scavenger hunt, there are two ways to do it. One, give each class a list of pictures to take at various locations in the school and a time limit. Classes will operate on an honors system and the class with the most pictures will win. The other is just to let classes set their own time and take the pictures without a strict winner. The pictures will make a fun slide show to present at a later date. For the schoolwide kahoot, create a game at kahoot.com and then have classes join a zoom meeting that a leader hosts for everyone. We’ve had a ton of fun with this one over the years.
